Khe and her grand-daughter

Ban Mui Khe's husband died after falling ill, leaving behind Khe and eight children. Due to poverty and illnesses, most of the children died. Khe is living with two daughters and two grandchildren.

Both of her surviving daughters became mentally ill after the deaths of their husbands and cannot work. Khe is alone in supporting the family and raising her grandchildren.

"All government allowances are used to keep my grandchildren in school," Khe said. "I usually go to the forest to find food. If I'm sick and can't go at all, we'll starve that day."

Some days, they have nothing but wild vegetables to eat. Khe said she wanted to bring both of her ill daughters to hospital but there was no money. "I only wish we have food to eat everyday. I can starve but my grand-daughter is still too small," she said.

The house they are living in are also deteriorating. They barely have any furniture and the walls do not adequately protect them from the wind.

Ha Co Yen, the chairman of Phong Du Ha Commune, said, "Our commune is remote and has many poor households, but Khe's situation is the most difficult."

"We give them rice and instant noodles, but they are only temporary measures, " Yen said. "We hope the community will help bring her two daughters to hospital and ensure the future of her grandchildren."
