Serious erosion has damaged a beach in the central province of Thua Thien Hue's Phu Vang District.

Serious erosion has damaged Phu Thuan Beach in the central province of Thua Thien Hue's Phu Vang District.

According to Nguyen Quang Dan, chairman of the Phu Thuan Commune People's Committee, heavy rain and strong waves over the past few days have caused erosion in many areas of the locality, including Phu Thuan Beach.

"Between June and September, some 70 metres of land spanning an area of 300 metres at the beach had fallen into the sea," the official said. "And on October 21 alone, a pavement and path of 150 metres long and 100 metres wide also slid into the sea following heavy rain."

Dan said this was the most severe erosion over the past 23 years.

The official said that erosion will threaten many beachside hotels and restaurants if the rainy weather continues. He has also asked for joint efforts from concerned departments and experts to find a proper measure to curb the problem.

Phu Thuan Commune has a coastline of 4.4 km, of which over 2.47 km has been protected by an embankment. The remaining 1.9 km often see erosion, affecting over 860 households.
