The third International Puppetry Festival was officially opened at the Hanoi Opera House yesterday.

At the opening ceremony, two Vietnamese representatives, the Hai Phong Puppet Theatre and the Vietnam Puppetry Theatre, staged two shows, Giai dieu ky uc (Memory) and Aladin.
Besides these two, Vietnam has some other contestants, including Thang Long Water Puppetry Theatre, Ha Tinh Song and Dance troupe, and Dak Lak Puppetry Ensemble.
Foreign troupes participating in the festival include The Key Theatre and Far Theatre from Israel, Art Troupes from Cambodia, Guangdong Province Puppet Art Theatre from China, Shan Puppet Theatre from Taiwan, Wayang Golex Ajen from Indonesia, Hunchangforn Puppet Group from Thailand, Cairo Puppet Theatre from Egypt, Kuka Istanbul from Turkey and Delegation of Laos.
Each invited troupe is scheduled to give a 30-40 minute performance which will be evaluated by a five-member jury, consisting of two Vietnamese and three foreign judges.
After the opening ceremony, performances will take place at the Vietnam Puppetry Theatre on 361 Truong Chinh Street, the Hong Ha Theatre on 51 Duong Thanh Street, and the Military Theatre on Mai Dich Street. The festival will last until September 10.
Apart from gold and silver medals, there will be five prizes awarded for best director, the best designer, the best composer, the best choreographer and the best art advisor.
