Miss Universe Vietnam 2017 being held in Khanh Hoa Province
The official document stated that based on the prime ministerial directives issued on November 1 about emergency response to storms and flood, the ministry asked the management board of Miss Universe Vietnam 2017 to halt the contest until the aftermath of the disaster is dealt with. The contest's management board should inform Khanh Hoa provincial authorities before resuming the contest.
Khanh Hoa People's Committee asked the management board to halt the contest on November 4 in Nha Trang City as Damrey made landfall. However, it was still held and caused public upset. There were opinions that the management board disregarded the storm damage and the aftermath. It was also argued that the contest took place in an unsafe environment.
Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung said Damrey was the strongest storm that hit the region for the past two decades. A report by the Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Control said that as of 5pm on November 7, at least 89 people have been killed, another 18 remained missing and 174 others injured in the storm. Khanh Hoa Province is the hardest hit with 37 people killed.
