Nguyen Thanh Hien is a 25 year old woman living in Nghe An Province but has to live with osteitis and myelitis for 13 years.
Hien can only sleep on her stomach
The woman who is paralysed in her legs, also faces the threat that they may need to be amputated.
In 2000, when she was in fifth grade, Hien fell off her bicycle on the way to school. Following the accident she was diagnosed with myelitis and a possible leg paralysis and she was told to visit the National Children Hospital for a more accurate diagnosis.
“We had to borrow money from everyone, from relatives to neighbours to afford the expenses a trip to Hanoi would bring," Hoang Thi Luong, Hien's mother said.
The doctors at National Children Hospital confirmed that Hien has myelitis and added that if they did not perform a surgery soon, Hien would be permanently paralysed from the waist down. But after one month of treatment, the disease only seemed to worsen and Hien was also diagnosed with osteitis on both legs.
Hien was then transfered to the National Hospital of Acupuncture and did get better during the next 11 months. However, her diseases were only half-treated because her family did not have enough money for surgery.
The pain became more intense after she was discharged, and since 2008, she can no longer leave her bed.
Hien suffers severe pain from her legs
Despite a generous help to pay for surgery, by 2011 her family had completely run out of money, and had no other means to remove the pins that had been inserted in her legs.
The diseases she suffers from could kill her if she sleeps on her back. "For the last five years, I’ve just laid on my stomach. I don’t even dare to sleep on my back because it's easy for me to suffocate when asleep." Hien said.
Hien's mother said their debts had mounted to nearly VND100 million (USD4,700) and they needed at least VND500-700 million to remove the pins and conduct other surgery to save Hien.
