Despite losing the use of his legs at the age of five, Duong Huu Nhi, 42, earns a living by selling lottery tickets and repairing bicycles, moving around on a self made vehicle.

His modest income, along with limited social assistance, is used to cover daily medical costs for both parents. His father, Duong Huu Lay, 68, requires regular kidney dialysis, costing about VND 200,000 to VND 300,000 per day (approximately USD 8 to USD 12), while his mother, Tran Thi Be Nho, 62, is in the final stage of thyroid cancer and relies on pain relief medication costing around VND 70,000 per day (approximately USD 3).
Nho recalled that Nhi lost mobility after a severe bout of polio in 1989. Years later, as the family struggled financially, she was diagnosed with cancer but chose to endure the illness without treatment due to a lack of funds.
The family has exhausted its limited resources, including mortgaging land documents and taking on various jobs, to sustain Lay’s dialysis treatment.

According to Luong Hoang Son, chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front in Hoi An Commune, the household is classified as near poor. In addition to a monthly allowance of VND 750,000 (approximately USD 30), local authorities provide rice and prioritise the family for charitable donations.
However, he said such support remains insufficient given the scale of hardship they face.
Recently, Nho was taken to Ho Chi Minh City for medical examination, but doctors advised the family to bring her home due to the severity of her condition. She has since stopped treatment to reduce the burden on her son.
