Work began on Wednesday morning on the house for Nguyen Tran Thu Trang’s family in Dong Xuyen District’s Da Loc Commune.
Trang, whose parents divorced four years ago, is in Grade 12. Her mother has been living with leukaemia for three years. Trang is now the pillar of the family, taking care of her ailing mother, her 11-year-old younger sister and her six-year-old brother.

Work started on the house on March 5
Their house has severely deteriorated, but the family cannot afford to repair it.
Trang’s family’s situation was highlighted in a story published by Dantri, drawing VND180 million (USD7,045) in donations from readers.
The 50-square-metre house for the family will cost VND160 million (USD6,274), including VND 100 million from readers’ donations. Meanwhile, the remaining amount will come from Dong Xuan District’s budget, which supports local disadvantaged households in building new homes.
