"I was sad as my son and I could not return home during the last Tet Lunar New Year Festival," Lien shared with tears. "It was my sixth Tet here. Bao Anh also stayed here with me this Tet as his heart problems have worsened. My only wish is that my son will get proper treatment and can return home and school."
The teenage boy was so thin and pale that he looked like a five-or-six-year-old child.
He also cried when hearing his mum sharing with Dantri during a recent visit to their rented room.
"I only hope that we can overcome the diseases and our family can be reunited again," he said.
Doctors said that the woman's condition had worsened and she needed an urgent kidney transplant. However, the transplant will cost billions of VND, which Lien said she could not afford.
"My son has undergone two operations, and he's still very weak," Lien said. "Doctors said that he also needs a heart valve transplant as soon as possible. I hope that someone will help us save him."
The poor woman said her family now depends on her husband Nguyen Xuan Cuong. However, he has hepatitis and cannot do hard work. And he also has to support his elderly ill mother and their small daughter. Therefore, their lives face lots of difficulties.
According to Ngo Thi Bay, head of the Tan Thanh Village, Lien's family is one of the most difficult cases in the area.
"We've also tried to help, but they need much more help to continue their treatment," the official said. "I hope they will receive more support from the community to overcome their difficulties."
