VND35bn Con Dao waste disposal deal proposed

Authorities in Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province will spend over VND35.5bn (USD1.5m) to move 70,000 tonnes of rubbish from Con Dao Island to the mainland for treatment.

Bai Nhat dumping site overloaded

During a meeting on February 21, the authorities of Con Dao District said that all rubbish in the island was collected at the Bai Nhat dumping site. This dumping site covers 3,800 square metres and has been in use for over 20 years. It has become overloaded and can no longer cope with the amount of new rubbish.

About 15 tonnes of rubbish is produced on the island each day and there's only one furnace with capacity for five tonnes. The amount of rubbish from tourism and floating rubbish from the ocean has been on the rise every year.

Bai Nhat dumping site

By the end of March 2018, the amount of untreated rubbish at Bat Nhat was 70,000 tonnes, threatening the surrounding environment as wastewater has leaked into the underground water and badly affected the land.

In order to deal with the problem, Con Dao authorities suggested compress the rubbish into blocks. Each 450-kg block of rubbish will be transferred to the Toc Tien Waste treatment Complex in Phu My Commune on the mainland.

Le Tuan Quoc, vice chairman of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, approved the VND35.5bn plan and asked related agencies to work together with the environment company, Kbec Vina, to start the plan before the rainy season comes.
