Director of the Vinh International Airport, Hoang Van Thu announced Monday morning that all flights from and to the airport would be delayed from 10 am until the crack is fixed.
The crack is around 40 square metres, eight metres long and seven centimetres deep. It has been said it was caused by prolonged hot weather.
"Four flights were conducted before we decided to close the airport from 10 am today for repairs," the airport director said. "Some 20 flights have been affected by the incident. It is expected that the repair work would be completed this evening."
Vinh International Airport covers some 30,000 square metres with just one 2,400-metre-long runway that entered operation in 2003. The airport currently serves between 21-26 flights daily.
Nghe An and some other northern and northern central provinces have just experienced a severe heat wave with temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius.
