In June, the majority of cars imported into Vietnam came from Thailand, China and Indonesia with 1,092; 716 and 638 cars respectively, representing up to 87% of the total.

In the month, 2,082 were cars of nine seats and below, down 48.9% against May.

In the first half of this year, Vietnam imported 40, 288 completely built cars, down 45.9% against the same period of last year. Of the figure, cars of nine seats and less than were 30,605, down 44.2 on-year.

Truck imports also saw an on-year decline of 56.6% with just 7,381.

Some car agents in Hanoi said that the major cause for the fall is the bad impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, many car producers in foreign countries suspended their operations, resulting in a supply shortage.

Experts said that the 50% reduction of registration fees for locally-assembled cars was another reason for the fall in car imports.
