Producing bricks and pottery is a traditional handicraft in the Mekong Delta. Yet thousands of old kilns have to be closed for not meeting the country’s environmental standards.

The project was developed and applied by the Hồ CHí Minh City-based Energy Conservation Research and Development Center (Enerteam) since 2009 at the ceramic brick kilns of Tân Mai Company in the southern province of Đồng Tháp.

It aims to improve the efficiency of energy use in making baked clay products, intensify the use of biomass energy instead of fossil fuels, and seek for a technological solution for the Mekong Delta to replace polluting outdated brick kilns, Enerteam said.

The project is part of a program initiated and implemented by the Asia-Pacific Forum for Environment and Development and funded by the Swedish organization SIDA.

The award granting ceremony is slated to take place on June 3 in Rwanda.

In 2006, the Vietnam Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s biogas project won the same prize.
