The VND120 billion (US$5.8 million) factory is the first phase of a 520 billion project to turn solid waste into fuel and environment-friendly coal and bricks. The second phase is underway.

The factory, the first of its kind in Vietnam, has been built by the Vietnam Environment Joint-Stock Company on a total area of 12 hectares located next to the Khanh Son garbage dump in Lien Chieu District, one of the city’s major landfills.

Statistics show 650 tons of garbage, 8% of which are nylon bags, are sent to the Khanh Son landfill daily.

Three tons of plastic bags can be recycled into one ton of oil thanks to the waste-to-fuel facility in the factory, said Nguyen Van Tuan, the director of the Vietnam Environment Joint-Stock Company.
