According to GSO General Director Nguyen Thi Huong, the country had 99.20 million citizens as of April 1, 2022 and is set to welcome its 100 millionth citizen in mid- April this year.

By that time, Vietnam will be among 15 countries in the world and three countries in Southeast Asia to have a population of 100 million.

"A large population size will bring many benefits as human resources play an important role in economic development," the GSO's official noted. "So we should be proud of this number."

Huong said that the government has approved to organise some activities to welcome the 100 millionth citizen next month including a parade, a public gathering and a welcoming ceremony to be held at the hospital.

Vietnam is currently the 15th most populous country in the world, the 8th most populous in Asia and the third most populous in Southeast Asia.

The country became an aging society in 2015 and will be an aged society by 2035, making it one of the fastest-aging countries in the world, according to the World Bank.
