Minister of National Defence and General Phung Quang Thanh is on an official friendship visit to China from April 21-28 at the invitation of his Chinese counterpart Liang Guang Lie.
Mr Thanh’s visit comes at a time when both countries are celebrating the 60th anniversary of their diplomatic ties and is expected to further solidify their strategic partnership.
During the visit, General Thanh has discussed issues of common concern with Chinese army leaders. They have agreed to continue exchange visits to share experiences among young army officers and foster close friendship between the two armies.
In a recent interview granted to a Beijing-based Voice of Vietnam (VOV) correspondent, General Thanh said that making the Vietnam-China border a frontier of peace, friendship, and long-term stability was also one of the main topics of his talks with the Chinese army leaders.
The two sides also agreed to increase naval cooperation by setting up a hotline, launching joint sea patrols to ensure safety for maritime operations and encouraging fishermen from both countries abide by maritime laws.
The Vietnamese and Chinese armies will exchange their experiences in training and logistics in the near future. Mr Thanh added.
Before concluding his visit, General Thanh is scheduled to see some units of the Chinese People’s Liberation Army.
