The Ministry of Transport held a ceremony on March 9 to open a new road, costing VND3.3 trillion, to traffic in the Mekong Delta.
The Nam Song Hau Road, which is 147km long and has 39 overpasses, links Can Tho City and Bac Lieu Province, running through localities such as Hau Giang and Soc Trang provinces.
The route will help shorten distance for people to travel from Soc Trang, Bac Lieu and Hau Giang provinces to Can Tho and Ho Chi Minh City, because travellers no longer have to use National Highway 1A.
Nam Song Hau and National Highway No. 60 will form a modern transport system to facilitate good exchange among localities in the Mekong Delta region.
Construction of the road was started on May 19, 2005.
Developing transport infrastructure in Mekong Delta is considered among Vietnam’s top priorities. Between 2006 and 2010, the region accounted for one third of the country’s total state-owned fund source used for transport infrastructure projects.
Many other major projects, such as Phu Quoc Airport, Trung Luong-My Thuan Expressway and Co Chien Bridge, are under construction in the region.
