Typhoon Koto weakens and moves slowly toward Vietnam

Typhoon Koto is weakening and drifting slowly over the central East Sea, and is expected to downgrade into a low-pressure area off Gia Lai and Khanh Hoa by December 3.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, on the morning of December 1, Typhoon Koto, the year’s 15th storm, had weakened to a level 8 system with gusts up to level 10, barely moving over the northwestern sector of the central East Sea.

By around 4 am on December 2, the storm is forecast to downgrade to a tropical depression and head southwest at about 5 km/h over the northwestern central East Sea, about 170 km east of the Gia Lai-Dak Lak coast.

The system is expected to weaken further into a low-pressure area over waters off Gia Lai-Khanh Hoa by 4 am on December 3.

Scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast on December 1 across the western central and southern northern East Sea, including the Hoang Sa area and waters from Gia Lai to Khanh Hoa, with stormy conditions in the northwestern sector. Tornadoes and strong gusts may occur.

On December 2, the northwestern central East Sea will see strong winds, waves of 3-5 metres and rough seas, easing later at night. Waters from Gia Lai to Khanh Hoa will face north to northwest winds at level 6 with rough conditions.
