Two whales spotted hunting off Dak Lak coast

Two whales were filmed hunting near the waters of Cu Lao Mai Nha in Dak Lak's O Loan Commune, drawing excitement from local residents and tourists in the area.

According to Nguyen Thanh Vuong, a resident of O Loan, the whales appeared at around 9 am on May 15 while he was taking visitors on a boat trip near Phuoc Dong fishing village.

Vuong said he noticed the pair repeatedly surfacing and diving as they hunted for fish, prompting him to record the scene on his mobile phone.

“One whale was about 10 metres long, while the other measured around 6-7 metres,” he said. “They continuously surfaced before diving back down to catch prey.”

The sight of the whales close to shore quickly attracted attention from both locals and tourists.

It was not the first whale sighting in the area. In July 2024, another pair of whales was recorded feeding near Cu Lao Mai Nha.

Local authorities said whales often follow schools of fish during migration periods. Coastal waters off Dak Lak, Gia Lai and Khanh Hoa currently provide clean waters and abundant food sources, making the region an attractive destination for marine species.

Authorities have advised residents and tourists to maintain a safe distance from whales and avoid approaching too closely in order to protect the animals’ natural hunting behaviour and ensure safety at sea.
