Reports from police in Lien Minh Commune of Sapa Town said that the flash flood occurred after heavy rain on the evening of September 12.

"Two brothers Vu A Nguyen, 24, and Vu A Gia, 32, in Lien Minh Commune died while the flash flood swept away their home," the report said. "Meanwhile, five other men have been swept away. Many houses and crops have been badly damaged."

Speaking with the media on Wednesday morning, the Secretary of Sapa Town Party Committee, Phan Dang Toan, said they were conducting rescue work and searching for the missing people in Lien Minh Commune.

Chairman of Lao Cai Province People's Committee, Trinh Xuan Truong, arrived in Lien Minh on the morning of September 13 to direct the rescue work.

A Lao Cai Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention and Control and Search and Rescue report showed that Sapa Town faced heavy rains from late Tuesday night until early Wednesday morning. Some areas in Sapa saw rainfalls of up to 142.40mm.
