Preliminary investigations found that the driver failed to comply with signals at a level crossing, leaving the truck stranded on the tracks when the accident occurred at 7.51 pm.

According to a report from the traffic police department, the driver of truck registration 29H-792.88 did not obey railway warning signals, including automatic barriers, and failed to stop to give way to train SE3 travelling from Van Dien to Thuong Tin. The vehicle became trapped on the tracks and was subsequently hit by the train.

Hanoi police said the driver died at the scene. He was trapped inside the cabin and was extricated by emergency services at around 10 pm.
Another man, Do Nhu Hung, 41, sustained multiple injuries and is being treated in hospital.
The train driver and passengers on board were not injured.
