Tropical depression forecast to strengthen into East Sea storm

A tropical depression is forecast to intensify into a storm by the afternoon of June 11, according to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

As of the morning of June 10, the system was located about 360 kilometres east-southeast of the Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands, with sustained winds of 39-49 km/h and gusts reaching 62-74 km/h, moving slowly westward.

This is the second tropical depression to appear in the East Sea since the start of the year.

Forecasters expect it to become the first storm of the year in the East Sea and the first to form over the Northwest Pacific in 2025.

The storm is expected to generate extensive tropical cloud bands, with storm systems covering much of the northern, central, and southern East Sea. Central coastal areas from Quang Tri to Quang Ngai will likely be affected.

Both the Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) islands are forecast to face strong winds and rough seas.

After moving toward the Paracel Islands, the tropical depression is forecast to strengthen into a storm and then shift northward toward the eastern coast of Hainan Island. This remains the most likely scenario.
