Thunderstorm topples hundreds of durian trees in Lam Dong

A severe thunderstorm and strong winds swept through a durian-growing area in Lam Dong Province, toppling around 500 mature trees and causing an estimated VND 5 billion (USD 190,000) in damage.

Authorities in Da Huoai 2 Commune were assessing the damage on August 22 and helping residents recover from the storm, which struck on August 20.

Local officials said the storm hit at around 3.30 pm, damaging homes and crops. Three houses had their roofs blown off, causing losses estimated at VND 110 million.

Around 500 fruit-bearing durian trees belonging to 45 households in Binh An, Village 1 and Village 2 were snapped or uprooted by strong winds, with losses estimated at VND 5 billion.

The storm also brought down two street-lighting poles along National Highway 20, causing about VND 40 million in damage. Lighting systems on several local roads were also damaged, with losses estimated at nearly VND 1 billion.

Local authorities have mobilised police, military personnel and residents, in coordination with Lam Dong police, to clear debris and help families repair their homes.

They are also continuing to assess the damage and help residents restore agricultural production.
