Son drowns, father missing after family swept out to sea in Quang Ngai

A 10-year-old boy has drowned and his father remains missing after the pair were swept out to sea while swimming at My Khe Beach in Quang Ngai Province during the Tet holiday.

The incident occurred at about 2.30 pm on February 21, the fifth day of the Lunar New Year, when the 38-year-old man took his two children, a 13-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son, to the beach for a swim.

Large waves and strong currents pulled the three far from shore, leaving them struggling in the water.

Local residents rushed into the sea and rescued the girl, who was taken to hospital for emergency treatment and is now reported to be in stable condition. The boy was later found dead. The father remains missing, with authorities continuing search efforts.

My Khe Beach, around 13 kilometres from the centre of Quang Ngai, is a popular destination that draws large crowds during public holidays.

In recent days, rough seas and strong rip currents have been reported in the area. Beach management teams have deployed staff to monitor conditions and warn swimmers, but the tragedy still occurred.
