The solar powered light column

A light column using solar energy was set up at Cham harbour on April 7 to provide light for people in Tan Hiep Commune on the island, which is a part of Hoi An City, Quang Nam Province.

The light column weighs about 200kg and contains solar energy absorption bars, 3 batteries that accumulate solar energy and LED lights.

The system will provide electricity for lighting at nights. During the day, it will automatically turn off the light and switch on solar energy absorption.

According to Nguyen Van An, Chairman of Tan Hiep Commune, at present, over 2,000 local people use power generated from diesel generators from 5.30 pm to 10.30 pm everyday at prices of VND5,000 ($0.26) per kilowatt. They don’t have any other energy source so they are forced to use petroleum oil lamps.

“Provincial leaders planned to bring an electricity grid here, but people still don’t know exactly when they can access electric power for daily activities and tourism. Thus, this solar energy really means a lot to them,” added An.

This project is worth VND133 million ($7,000) and is sponsored by Quoc Sy Limited Company and Point Energy Group (USA).
