After a day of roaming the alleys and streets to find recyclables, Nguyen Thi Nha uses the nighttime to sort through her finds.
“We have two children who are both of school age. My husband is often ill, so I decided to come here to trade in waste metals, hopefully earning enough money to support my family. I can earn between VND30,000 and VND50,000 (USD1.42-USD2.37) per day. The room I stay in is anywhere from VND5,000-VND7,000 (USD0.23-USD0.33), depending on the season,” Nha says.
Along Nguyen Trai Street in Thanh Xuan Distrct, Nguyen Thi Tinh, from the outlying district of Thach That, stoops in the cold behind her cart of boiled corn and baked sweet potatoes. She said, "The longer this cold keeps up, the less money we make. People don't like to go out on cold days."
On cold days tea stands along Tran Quang Dieu Street remain busy, serving many of the labourers after a hard working day.
While the Tet holiday is nearing, workers at construction sites are busy working in the cold, even into the night, to earn some extra money for the holidays.
