The project's management board said on Friday that prolonged hot, dry weather and strong southwesterly winds had worsened dust levels at the site, which spans about three kilometres in length and 500 metres in width.
Seven water trucks currently operate daily from 5 am to 6 pm to suppress dust, but the unusually dry conditions have limited their effectiveness, the board said.
To reduce the impact, the project will reorganise construction traffic onto designated haul roads, cover completed earthworks with moisture-retaining soil to prevent dust from spreading, and increase dust-suppression efforts.
Contractors have also been instructed to cut the number of haulage vehicles operating on site from around 250 to 30-40 a day, while additional water supply points and water trucks will be deployed in coordination with local authorities.
The commitments followed local media reports that dust blowing from the construction site had blanketed nearby residential areas, forcing some families to send young children elsewhere and wear face masks indoors.
The VND 5.8 trillion (USD 221 million) Quang Tri Airport project was recently upgraded from ICAO Category 4C to 4E, allowing it to handle wide-body aircraft including the Boeing 787 and Airbus A350.
Construction of the runway has been completed, while the control tower and passenger terminal have largely finished their main structural works.
