According to Hoang Ba Nam, Secretary of Mong Cai City Party Committee, they had discussions with authorities in China’s Dongxing City on December 21, 2022 and reached an agreement on the reopening of the border gate.

"We're now preparing for the reopening day," he said. "People and export goods going through the border gate will no longer have to undergo COVID-19 testing. The easing of pandemic prevention measures will create favourable conditions and reduce costs for import-export businesses here."

However, the official stressed that people going through the area will still have to wear masks, disinfect their hands, and avoid gathering in crowds. Drivers of transit trucks still have to wear protective clothing, masks, gloves, shoe covers, and glasses. In addition, staff working at the border gate still have to strictly follow pandemic prevention and control measures.

Also from January 8, the border gates with China in some other provinces including Lao Cai and Lang Son will also reopen.
