Private schools hike tuition levels again - 1
This year is no exception. Public school tuition fees have remained unchanged, while their private counterparts, focused on making profits, have increased theirs significantly.

The Nguyen Khuyen Private High School, for instance, has increased their tuition fees from VND860,000 ($41) per month to VND1.5 million ($71.4) per month, up nearly 80 percent.

At the Dang Khoa High School, fees have gone up from VND1.2 million ($57) per month to nearly VND1.7 per month ($81), while the Thanh Binh High School now charges VND1.6 million ($76.2) per month, up from VND1.3 million ($61.9).

The increase in fees was necessary to maintain the schools' operations, their principals said. School managers also blamed the increasing prices of petrol and electricity for the tuition hike.

Private universities and college have not lagged behind.

The Hoa Sen University collected VND15 million ($714) – VND19 million ($904) per semester from, freshmen entering college last year.

Freshmen at this university pay VND18.6 million ($885.7) – VND22.8 million ($1,085) per semester.

Hoang Duc Binh, head of the university's enrolment office, told the Phu Nu (Women) newspaper that his university has new school fees for freshmen each year.

The fee is based on market prices, Binh said.

The HCM City University of Technology also increases its fees by 10 percent for existing students and 20 percent for freshmen.

Nguyen Quoc Anh, head of the university's counselling and enrolment office, said that his university typically increased its fees by 10 percent each year to cover inflation and invest in better services for students.
