A flash flood hits Pooi Village

According to Chairman of Minh Quang Commune People's Committee, Ma Duc Chien, Pooi Village has 40 families with 168 people who earn their living by growing rice and from forestry products. As many as 80 percent of local people are living in poverty.

"The village lies some seven kilometres from the centre of Minh Quang Commune," the official said. "There is only one road and a makeshift bridge to connect with neighbouring localities and it's often inundated during flood season, turning the village into an island."

Chien said that the villagers have always dreamed of having a firm bridge across the Pooi Spring so that they can safely travel during the floods, but local authorities have been unable to carry out the project due to financial issues.

"The current bridge was made by placing two concrete pipes into the spring and then piling soil on top of them to make the surface," he said. "The floodwater is slowed due to the size of the pipes restricting the flow."

A local resident, Ma Van Thang, said that the pipes were washed away during a flood last year.

"We usually have to stay home during the floods, and that's one of the reasons why our village is so poor," he said. "What we fear the most is that someone needs to go to hospital during this time. We really hope that people help us build a bridge.”
