PM orders hunt for source of currency revaluation rumour

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has asked the Ministry of Public Security to investigate who spread false information about the revaluation of the Vietnam dong, which has affected macro economic activities.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has asked the Ministry of Public Security to investigate who spread false information about the revaluation of the Vietnam dong, which has affected macro economic activities.

Rumours circulating online that the State Bank of Vietnam was going to revalue the Vietnam dong had encouraged people to buy gold or foreign currency since November.

Gold prices and the USD-VND exchange rate increased sharply afterwards.

On December 1, the State Bank of Vietnam denied the rumours and said it was spread with ill intent. The SBV warned people to be alert to fake news that could badly affect the daily lives and monetary security.

"Even with our stable economy, such rumour will have a really bad effect. I confirm that this is fake," said Dao Minh Tu, deputy governor of the SBV.

During the national conference on the reorganisation and reform of state-owned firms for the 2016-2020 period held on December 6, Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc ordered the police to find the person that first started the rumour. He went on to say the public should strongly criticise this behaviour to ensure economic stability.

"We have to announce this publicly to assure the people to continue business like usual. I want to underline that," he said.
