A corner of Phu Quoc Airport
On the morning of May 9, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), in coordination with the Kien Giang Provincial People’s Committee, officially announced the master plan for Phu Quoc Airport for the 2021–2030 period, with a vision to 2050.
According to the plan, Phu Quoc Airport will serve both civil and military, commercial aviation purposes. The airport will accommodate wide-body aircraft such as Boeing 747, Boeing 787, and Airbus A350.
A key element of the master plan is the addition of nearly 200 hectares, increasing the airport's total area to approximately 1,050 hectares.
The current Terminal 1 will be retained, while a new Terminal 2 is planned to the east of Terminal 1. Terminal 2 will be expanded to handle around 6 million passengers per year by 2030 and 14 million by 2050.
The airport will also be upgraded with 30 aircraft parking positions, along with a designated VIP apron. By 2050, the airport is expected to support up to 45 aircraft stands. This area will be prioritized for early development to serve the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in 2027.
Phu Quoc Airport is projected to handle around 10 million passengers and 25,000 tonnes of cargo annually by 2030. By 2050, the airport aims to serve 18 million passengers and 50,000 tonnes of cargo per year.
At the planning announcement ceremony, Giang Thanh Khoa, Vice Chairman of the Kien Giang People’s Committee, stated that the master plan will enable the province to be more proactive in investing in and operating aviation infrastructure, ensuring sustainable and synchronized development alongside other key regional projects.
Currently, Phu Quoc Airport has a single passenger terminal with a designed capacity of 4 million passengers per year, one runway capable of handling large aircraft, 14 aircraft parking stands, and a cargo terminal with a capacity of 14,500 tonnes annually.
In 2024, the airport served more than 4.1 million passengers, surpassing its design capacity. Of these, 2.3 million were domestic and 1.8 million were international travelers.
