Since January 8, the Lao Cai–Hekou Border Gate in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai has received around 40,000 people travelling between Vietnam and China.

Most of these people move from Lao Cai to Hekou Town in China to visit their relatives or enjoy tours. Meanwhile, those from China to Lao Cai are mostly visiting Vietnam to work.
People are requested to conform to Covid-19 prevention regulations at the border gate. This is the major cause for the long queues.
Many people have to wait for hours to complete exit or entry procedures at the border gate. Lots of people have to be there from the early morning.
