As indoor temperature have reached 39 degrees centigrade in Hanoi, the relatives of many patients at Bach Mai Hospital have to shelter under trees and concrete benches to avoid the heat.

At around 1 pm today, May 18 when the outdoor temperature was measured at nearly 50 degrees centigrade, hundreds of people were sitting under trees in front of A9 Emergency Hospital to rest.

Many of them are from localities such as Son La, Ha Tinh and Dien Bien.

The hot weather in the northern region is expected to ease on May 19. But a day later, it is likely to increase again and the spell will end on May 23, according to the National Centre for Hydro-meteorological Forecasting. Hanoi’s UV index is measured at up to 9-10, which negatively impacts people's health.

Tu Ba Hai, 44, from the central province of Ha Tinh said that he could not sleep last night due to the heat.

Tran Van Quyen, 66, from the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai has come to the hospital for three days. However, because of the hot weather, he has been mostly sleepless.
