According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, hot weather will begin affecting the Red River Delta from June 19, with some areas experiencing severe heat.
Daytime temperatures are expected to reach 35-36 degrees Celsius, with some locations recording more than 37 degrees Celsius. Relative humidity is forecast to fall to between 55 per cent and 60 per cent.
The heatwave is expected to expand into the northern midland region from June 21.
From June 23 to June 25, mountainous areas in northern Vietnam are also forecast to experience widespread hot and severely hot conditions following an extended period of rainfall. Meanwhile, the midland and delta regions of northern Vietnam are expected to remain under intense heat until around June 25.
Meteorological experts said this heatwave is likely to be one of the strongest so far this year in northern Vietnam. Hanoi is forecast to record temperatures of around 38 degrees Celsius on several days.
Combined with the urban heat island effect, which causes densely built-up areas to retain and radiate heat, the perceived and locally measured temperatures in parts of the capital could exceed 40 degrees Celsius.
Authorities have advised residents to limit outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day, stay hydrated and take precautions against heat-related illnesses as the prolonged period of extreme temperatures approaches.
