Hundreds of flights had been operated without passengers from HCM City's Tan Son Nhat Airport after the 2023 Tet Lunar New Year holiday.
According to the Southern Airports Authority (SAA), as many as 339 flights departed from Tan Son Nhat with no passengers onboard between January 26-30. Most of the flights were operated by Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air.
"Due to the high demand on the routes to HCM City, especially the Noi Bai-Tan Son Nhat route, ticket prices on this route sharply increased on those days," SAA said. "Many airlines provided good discounts on the routes departing from Tan Son Nhat but still saw few passengers."
Reports from SAA showed that the southern airport served a total of over 720,000 passengers during the five peak days from January 26-30 with 60 percent of arrivals on domestic flights.
On January 27 or the sixth day of the Lunar New Year, Tan Son Nhat served more than 149,000 passengers, marking the highest number of single-day passengers ever. As many as 91,000 of the passengers flew into the city on that day, including 71,000 on domestic flights.
