All of the monkeypox patients in HCM City are men and 84 percent of them admitted having sex with men, said Nguyen Hong Tam, director of the municipal Centre for Disease Control and Prevention.

Tam provided the information at a press conference on Thursday afternoon on HCM City’s socio-economic situation in the first seven months of the year.

Last year, HCM City recorded 107 monkeypox cases, and the figure was 49 in the first seven months of this year. The patients were male, and up to 84 percent of the patients admitted that they had sex with men.

Tam added that the local health sector is tightening the supervision of the disease at border checkpoints and within the community.

People are encouraged to wash their hands with soap and clean water or use hand sanitiser regularly. When facing acute rashes accompanied by one or more suspicious symptoms, they should seek medical advice, self-isolate and avoid sexual activities.

As of August 12, more than 600 fever and rash cases have been reported, with 346 confirmed measles cases in the city. Over 84 percent of the affected children were either unvaccinated or had incomplete vaccination schedules.

The city witnesses around three Covid-19 cases per week and no new variants have been detected.
