Garlic is a key crop, nicknamed White Gold in Ly Son due to its high value. However, because of the impact of Covid-19, garlic prices have sharply fallen.
Ly Son Island faces high garlic inventory
Speaking to Dantri/DTiNews, vice chairman of Ly Son District People’s Committee Dang Tan Thanh, said that the locality had more than 300 hectares of garlic. Every year, the district’s dry garlic output reaches some 1,800-2,200 tonnes. The figure was 2,100 tonnes in this year’s winter-spring crop.
Over the past four months, local farmers have sold roughly 300 tonnes of garlic in total at the price of VND30,000 (USD1.3) -VND40,000 per kilo, down VND50,000-60,000 against the time before the pandemic.
The two major outlets for Ly Son garlic are through traders and tourists, but the pandemic has severely affected garlic sales over the past two years.
Thanh added that the district has contacted many companies to seek outlets for local garlic.
