Motorbike overflows to HCM City after Tet:
Tran Thi Hoang Anh, 24 years old, in Can Tho City, had to travel more than 200km to Ho Chi Minh City on a motorbike to go back to work after Tet.
“I thought there would be a lot of coach routes from Ho Chi Minh City to the southwest, so I didn't book a ticket in advance. But I couldn't find any ticket on the 6th day of the New Year. I would have had to wait until the 10th. For me this was not an option because it was too late for my work, which started on the 8th,” Anh said.
On January 29 (the 7th of lunar January) gateway roads from the southwestern localities to HCM City were full of means of transport, including a large number of motorbikes, twice the normal number, causing traffic jams on some highways and roads. Many motorbikes carry backpacks and New Year’s presents.
Passenger car ticket offices in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue, such as Phi Long and Minh Huong, were crowded with long queues of people on January 29. Even though they were operating at full-capacity, the rush to secure transportation, starting on the 4th of lunar January, caused ticket prices to skyrocket to 3 or 4 times the usual rates.
At Hue Station, train tickets to HCM City between the 7th and 10th sold out, forcing people to delay their return to the city had to the 11th.
