The Japanese Embassy in Vietnam has agreed to fund US $1.5 million to the central province of Quang Tri for clearing unexploded ordnance (UXO) remained after the war in its various communes and coastal towns, the Quang Tri Department of Foreign Affairs reported
Accordingly, the clearance will be conducted within 14 months on both wet surface and land areas of 690 ha until May 17, 2011.
Inspected communes and towns include Vinh Quang and Vinh Thach in Vinh Linh District, Cua Viet, Gio Hai and Trung Giang in Gio Linh, Trieu An and Trieu Van in Trieu Phong, and Hai An and Hai Khe in Hai Lang.
According to the provincial Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs, since 1975, over 7,500 people in Quang Tri have been killed or injured by UXO. Of the victims, 2,600 died and hundreds of others were seriously injured.
The province has also received support from other international organisations, including MAG from the UK , RNEW from Norway and the US and SODI from Germany , to carry out mine clearance, improve the environment and develop local infrastructures
