Ho Thi Tu Anh, 20, has been struggling with sarcoma since she was 13. Due to her family's difficult financial situation, she had to drop out from school to seek treatment in different hospitals in many places.
Sharing about her decision to have a baby despite her poor health, the woman said that she wanted to provide a healthy granddaughter for her adoptive mother.
"I was an abandoned child," Anh recalled. "My adoptive mother found me when I was a newborn baby left on a roadside. At that time she was seeking medical treatment for her infertility. And she decided to adopt me. She and her husband then divorced and she brought me up alone."
Anh shared that she received lots of love from her adoptive mother.
"Although she was poor and she raised me in lots of hardship, she decided to borrow money from everywhere she could to save me when doctors said I had cancer," Anh said. "She has also tried to do different work to cover my treatment over the past seven years. And now I think I wouldn't have much time left to stay beside her, I'm worried that she could be alone when I die. So I decided to give her a baby."
Tu Anh, however, said that she now felt very sorry for being unable to take care of her baby properly.
"I want to apologise to my baby for being unable to bring her up properly," she said in tears. "I just want to live longer to take care of her."
The adoptive mother, Ho Thi Chau, 58, said that she was very worried for Tu Anh's health.
"I was very shocked when she told me that she was pregnant with her boyfriend," Chau said. "I took her to the doctors who said that she should have an abortion as soon as possible as it would threaten the lives of both the mother and child. But Tu Anh insisted that she keep the baby and she decided to stop her cancer treatment."
Anh's health is worsening.
Chau shared that Tu Anh had faced lots of life-threatening situations during her pregnancy and delivery, but she had overcome all.
"The baby girl is now five months old," she said. "But Anh has been getting weaker recently. I'm very worried."
Speaking with Dantri/Dtinews, head of Nghia Bac Village, Ho Huu Yen, said that Chau's family is very difficult and they need support from the community.
"Chau has incurred a debt of over VND400 million since her adoptive daughter faced cancer seven years ago," the official said. "Now the daughter's health is worsening and she is having to take care of a small child. She can’t do anything to earn money. I hope that they will receive help to overcome this difficult time."
