When it is sunny, the smell from the canal becomes terrible, said Ha Tuy Tuong, 85, said, adding that his family had to use different ways to mitigate the air pollution.

The second phase of the project is underway but has progressed at a snail’s pace due to site clearance difficulties. The site clearance has affected as many as 344 houses in District 6. However, they disagreed with the low compensation offered.

In the past, the Hang Bang Canal used to be one of the vital waterway routes in the city’s Cho Lon area. In 2015, the city carried out a project to completely dredge the canal to restore its flow, regulate water and prevent flooding.
