HCM City woman fined for scattering joss paper

A woman has been fined after scattering cash and joss paper onto a street in central HCM City in an apparent attempt to ward off bad luck.

Traffic police and local officers in Tan Dinh Ward issued administrative penalties to two women involved in the incident after a video of the act circulated widely on social media.

The incident occurred on May 18 when one woman was riding pillion on a motorbike travelling along Hai Ba Trung Street. She was seen throwing cash and joss paper from a plastic bag onto the road while the vehicle was moving.

Following an investigation, the woman admitted she had scattered the items in an attempt to rid herself of bad luck.

She was fined VND 1.5 million (USD 57) for littering on a public roadway. The motorcyclist was separately fined VND 500,000 for riding in the wrong lane.

Police said the act not only damaged the city's appearance and environment but also posed potential risks to road users.
