Heavy rains and a rising tide caused serious flooding in several streets in HCM City yesterday afternoon, leading to traffic jams and chaos.

The two-hour rain swamped several streets in the metropolis on the evening of November 5. Hoa Binh Street in District 11 was the hardest hit, underneath nearly one metre of water.
Several other streets saw water levels around half a metre, including Khuong Viet in District 11, Vo Van Kiet Avenue, Tan Hoa and Dang Nguyen Can Roads in District 6, Nguyen Van Linh Avenue in District 7, Ho Hoc Lam and An Duong Vuong Roads in Tan Binh District.
The situation forced many residents of Hoa Binh Street to move to the surrounding areas along Au Co and Lac Long Quan streets, causing serious traffic problems during rush hour.
Residents of other affected areas had to close their shops and bolt up their doors to create temporary “dykes” in order to prevent water from overflowing into their houses.
On Au Co Street, streams of vehicles were compelled to line up for several hours despite efforts by traffic police to alleviate the situation. By 8pm on the same day the situation slightly improved.
