HCM City will start installing solar power systems on the roof of public agencies in September this year.

This is part of a pilot rooftop solar power plan for administrative headquarters and public units approved by local authorities in 2021 following the municipal Department of Industry and Trade’s proposal.

The plan will cover nearly 1,800 state-owned agencies with a total capacity of 160MW peak output.

According to survey data from the Ho Chi Minh City Power Development Master Plan for 2016-2025 with a vision until 2035, the city’s sunshine hours during the dry season reaches roughly 300 hours per month, and 150 hours during the rainy season. This shows the great potential the city has for solar energy development.

The headquarters of some public agencies in the city have applied to install rooftop solar power, including the Department of Science and Technology and the people’s committees of districts 4, 8, 10 and 12 and Phu Nhuan District People’s Committee.

HCM City Department of Industry and Trade Deputy Director Nguyen Thi Kim Ngoc said the department is completing solar power installation plan procedures for submission to the municipal administration later this month.

Any faulty or damaged solar panel equipment will be collected and recycled by the producers and importers to avoid any negative environmental impact.

Ngoc also added that the plan will regulate the responsibilities of concerned agencies over fire prevention, electricity safety and the design of solar power systems.

The HCM City Power Corporation reported that the city is now home to 14,210 rooftop solar power projects with a total capacity of 358.38 MWp, making up around 7.82 percent of the peak capacity in 2021 (4,580 MW) of the city's power grid.
