HCM City has worked out scenarios to respond to hand, foot and mouth disease amid the increasing number of patients.

According to HCM City Pasteur Institute, the southern region of Vietnam has recorded 9,000 hand, foot and mouth patients, including four deaths who tested positive for Enterovirus 71 (EV71).

HCM City has recorded 2,400 cases, including 147 at local hospitals for the treatment. Among those, 14 are in critical condition and all aged below six.

The city has prepared three scenarios to deal with hand, foot and mouth disease outbreaks.

In the first scenario, the city will arrange over 200 beds, including 30 for intensive treatment for hand, foot and mouth patients with children’s hospitals prioritised. The roll-out would be based on having less than 50 new patients hospitalised per day and fewer than 20 serious patients treated at hospitals.

In the second scenario, the city will use 700 beds at the three children’s hospital and the city’s Hospital for Tropical Diseases for the treatment including 80 for intensive treatment if the number hospitalised increases to 50-100 and 20-70 patients are in critical condition at the hospital daily.

In the third scenario, the city will prepare 1,400 beds for hand, foot and mouth treatment. In this case, the city would see 100-200 new patients hospitalised per day.

The HCM City Department of Health has asked the Drug Administration to supply more hand, foot and mouth medicines.

The city’s three children’s hospitals and the Hospital for Tropical Diseases have been assigned to provide foot, hand and mouth treatment training for lower level hospitals. These four hospitals have been instructed to work with the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit to conduct gene sequencing and identify the genotypes responsible for severe cases of EV71.
