
HCM City has detected three new Omicron sub-variants including XBB.1.9.1, XBB.1.16, and XBB.1.16.1 through gene sequencing results.
The Pasteur Institute in HCM City conduct gene sequencing on 13 Covid-19 patients on April 21 and found 11 of them were infected with the Omicron subvariants XBB.1.9.1, XBB.1.16 and XBB.1.16.1, which were reported for the first time in the city. The subvariant XBB.1.9.1 was earlier detected in Hanoi last week.
According to the department, XBB.1.16 has been detected in over 20 countries and is currently the dominant variant that is spreading in India.
Vietnam on April 22 recorded a Covid-19 related death after experiencing a single coronavirus fatality for months. The country has so far logged over 11.54 million infections, ranking 13th out of 230 countries and territories worldwide.
