Hanoi traffic congestion persists as more new bottlenecks emerge

Hanoi's traffic gridlock remains a complex issue as 16 new bottlenecks have been identified, according to the municipal Department of Transport.

By the end of November this year, 13 out of 33 traffic bottlenecks had been resolved, leaving 20 still unaddressed. However, 16 new traffic bottlenecks have emerged, bringing the total number of congested points in Hanoi to 36 during peak hours.

The additional traffic choke points are situated in different districts, including Nguyen Trai Street in Thanh Xuan District, Tran Phu Street in Ha Dong, Lang Street in Cau Giay, Thai Ha and Huynh Thuc Khang streets in Dong Da, and Cau Giay-Xuan Thuy and Ho Tung Mau streets in Cau Giay and Nam Tu Liem districts.

The Hanoi Department of Transport attributes traffic jams to incomplete transportation infrastructure, high population density, rapid urban growth, and an annual 4-5 percent increase in the number of personal vehicles.

In addition, only two metro lines in the city have been put into operation. The bus rapid transit system has just completed one of eight planned routes, while monorail lines have not yet been built.

The rate of public passenger transportation in Hanoi remains low, at just 19.5 percent.

Director of the Hanoi Department of Transport, Nguyen Phi Truong, said that the key to dealing with traffic congestion in the capital is related to personal vehicle management. The city adds hundreds of thousands of new vehicles yearly, highlighting the need for more effective management solutions.
