Hanoi swelters in severe heatwave as temperatures hit 42 degrees Celsius

Hanoi and much of northern Vietnam are forecast to endure severe heat, peaking at 42 degrees Celsius in the city on May 26.

According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, hot weather had been recorded across the Northern Delta, Phu Tho, the area from Thanh Hoa to Danang City, eastern Quang Ngai to Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa and the southeastern region on May 22, with severe heat in some places.

Maximum temperatures are generally 35-37 degrees Celsius, with some areas exceeding 37 degrees Celsius, including Nghe An, Quang Tri and Dak Lak. The lowest relative humidity is generally 50-55 per cent.

Forecasters said the heat would continue to expand and intensify across many areas on May 23-24.

From May 23 to 24, northern Vietnam is expected to see widespread hot weather, with severe heat in some places. Maximum temperatures will generally range from 35-37 degrees Celsius, with some areas above 37 degrees Celsius. The lowest relative humidity will be 45-50 per cent.

During this period, the area from Thanh Hoa to Danang City, eastern Quang Ngai to Dak Lak, and Khanh Hoa is expected to face severe heat, with temperatures generally at 36-38 degrees Celsius and above 38 degrees Celsius in some places.

In the southeastern region, hot weather will persist, with temperatures generally at 35-36 degrees Celsius and above 36 degrees Celsius in some places. The lowest relative humidity will be 45-50 per cent.

US weather service AccuWeather forecast that from May 23 to 26, Hanoi would endure an intense heatwave, with temperatures reaching as high as 42 degrees Celsius.

More specifically, the service forecast that temperatures in Hanoi would climb to 41 degrees Celsius at midday and in the afternoon on May 24. By May 26, temperatures in the city between 1pm and 3pm are forecast to exceed 42 degrees Celsius.

From May 27, temperatures in Hanoi are forecast to gradually ease. Daily highs are expected to range between 37 and 38 degrees Celsius.
