According to the National Centre for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, scattered showers and thunderstorms, with some places experiencing heavy rain, developed across Thanh Hoa and Nghe An on the afternoon and evening of May 12.

Rainfall recorded between 4pm and 8pm the same day exceeded 50mm in several areas, including Con Cuong, Nghe An, with 64mm, and Dong Van, Nghe An, with 58mm.

Forecasts for May 13 say the northeast, Thanh Hoa and Nghe An will continue to see scattered showers and thunderstorms. Rainfall is expected to range from 10mm to 30mm, with some places receiving more than 70mm.

Whirlwinds, lightning, hail and strong gusts may occur during thunderstorms. Storms accompanied by extreme weather could disrupt agricultural production, fell trees and damage homes, transport works and infrastructure.

Localised heavy rain also raises the risk of flash floods on small rivers and streams, landslides in mountainous areas and flooding in low-lying areas.

Residents have been advised to regularly monitor forecasts and warnings on thunderstorms, lightning, flash floods and landslides on the website of the Meteorology and Hydrology Administration in order to prepare for unusual weather developments.

Meanwhile, US forecaster Accuweather said Hanoi would face intense heat on May 13. Between 2 pm and 4 pm, temperatures could reach 35 degrees Celsius.
