Nguyen Thanh Chan released after being wrongly sentenced for 10 years in prison.

According to the People’s Supreme Procuracy, on August 15, 2003 a woman from Me Village, was killed at her home.  Nguyen Thanh Chan became the main suspect because his "left foot almost fit the footprints left at the scene". Apparently, he was also “acting suspiciously". He was arrested for murder on September 29.

Chan's case went to trial, and on these grounds the judge, Pham Tuan Chiem, convicted Chan, who was sentenced to life in prison. He made several appeals and always maintained his innocence. But it was only after ten years of incarceration that police secured the confession of another man in the crime and Chan was released.

Chiem has been released on bail pending during the investigation, but remains under house arrest.
